Rodney Square Restoration and Revitalization

Rodney Square Restoration and Revitalization brought new life to one of Wilmington’s most recognizable civic spaces, creating a more welcoming, functional, and vibrant gathering place for residents, visitors, and downtown businesses. The multi-phase project included improvements to the Square’s stonework, paving, drainage, irrigation, lighting, electrical systems, site furnishings, landscaping, and public amenities, all while respecting the historic character and central role of Rodney Square in the City of Wilmington.

Phase 1 focused on major infrastructure and site improvements, including the installation of a large interactive fountain system at the forefront of the Square. The work also included select site demolition, fence removal, demolition of the existing utility building, and construction-related improvements to support the Square’s long-term use and maintenance.

Phase 2, completed in 2024 for the City of Wilmington, continued the restoration and revitalization effort with new pavers around the Square, refreshed landscaping throughout, larger plantings, and general restoration of existing site features. A restoration expert supported the work, which included cleaning and restoring lights, lanterns, handrails, bus stops, benches, and smaller fountains. Multiple lampposts were replaced with a new style, DART added updated bus schedule signage, and additional site furnishings were restored or replaced to improve both the appearance and function of the public space.

Together, the two phases transformed Rodney Square while preserving the elements that make it a historic and meaningful part of downtown Wilmington. The completed restoration balances civic character, improved usability, updated infrastructure, and refreshed landscaping to ensure the Square continues serving the community for years to come.
