EDiS Intern Experience: My Summer at the University of Delaware Whitney Athletic Center
This summer I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to intern with EDiS on site of the University of Delaware Whitney Athletic Center. Not only do I attend UD and love football, but I’ve also always been fascinated by sports stadiums. Add all of that and the fact that I have an apartment just five minutes away from the job site and obtaining this internship was perfect for me! Easing into my role as an intern, I was so excited to be able to see the project come to life. I couldn’t wait to go to football games with my friends and be that annoying know-it-all guy. I was really looking forward to getting my first glimpse into the construction management industry and I’m happy that my internship provided me with important knowledge moving forward.
I wasn’t sure what to expect for the summer – other than the fact that I knew I would learn a lot. Senior Project Manager Kevin Lucas, one of a handful of EDIS employees I shadowed, used to joke around with me that I’m going to go back to school and I already know everything there is to know about construction management. On that note, I learned some invaluable lessons from my summer internship at EDiS Company. Before my internship, I only had a little bit of knowledge about what construction management was and it was just what I’d learned in the classroom. Prior to this experience, I’d never even been on an active construction site. Now, I’m aware of safety protocols, business etiquette, and what it takes to get a construction project off the ground. I have a good understanding of how submittals, RFIs, CCDs, Bid Packages, and other important documents are executed. I can review specs and drawings and be able to comprehend what I’m looking at. I’m comfortable interacting with foreman, laborers, operators, and I’ve become a much better communicator in general thanks to my experience at EDiS Company.
I look forward to what the future holds and will always remember my first internship with EDiS and all of the valuable knowledge I’ve gained. Thank you EDiS, and a special thank you to Project Manager Kristin Caras and Senior Project Manager Kevin Lucas for taking me under your wing, helping me grow as a person and a project manager, and making my internship experience great.
