A team consisting of Red Clay Consolidated School District, Studio JAED, EDiS Company and a host of subcontractors began renovations and additions in June 2013 to A.I. DuPont High School. The primary task of this renovation is the replacement of the existing mechanical systems, which in turn will deliver significant energy savings to the district. The project also calls for the addition of a corridor that will connect the main building to a classroom annex and new addition, providing two extra classrooms. The renovations to the existing structure, which was originally built in 1967, will include work on the main office to improve security, a new school store, several classroom reconfigurations, new bathrooms on the second floor and the replacement of windows and ceilings throughout the school. Due to the complexity of the project, the work will be delivered in a phased construction plan. The full project will end up being twelve phases throughout the school year and cross over two summers.
This past summer, the project team completed the first phase of the project, which includes the construction of the corridor to connect the buildings and the replacement of mechanical piping, equipment and ceilings in all of the school’s main corridors. The work completed during Phase 1 is the backbone for construction throughout the remaining phases of the project. The existing electrical and mechanical systems in the corridors were upgraded to feed the new mechanical equipment being installed in the classrooms during later phases. Additionally, if they completed all of the work in the corridors over the summer, it would prevent distractions during the school year as students are going about their daily routines. As summer ended, the project was a little over 50% complete. In order to get so much achieved in a short, three-month period, the project team spent several weeks coordinating the work with the design team and Red Clay Consolidated School District staff. A final schedule was approved and contractors worked to meet the completion date.
As the school year continues, EDiS and the project team will be working closely with the school to allocate time for second shift work. Additionally, the team will be planning ways to systematically move through the facility by completing the renovation work classroom by classroom. The project is expected to be completed in August of 2014.
