Building

history in Delaware.

The Delaware Historical Society (DHS) was in need of more space for the Delaware History Museum, and Old Town Hall provided the perfect solution. DHS had raised enough money to bring the beautiful facility back to life and EDiS Company signed on to manage the expansion and renovations. The project consisted of 66,933 SF of meticulous upgrades. The project scope included the upgrade of Old Town Hall to bring its MEP systems up to date and to make it accessible; connecting Old Town Hall to the Delaware History Museum on all levels with a new connector and an elevator; rearranging some spaces to make them more usable; creating new ADA compliant restrooms in the Museum; improving site amenities on the Market Street and King Street sides of Old Town Hall; and creating dedicated space for a Center for African American Heritage. All of this was completed within the confines of a historically significant building on a busy urban site.

Building

stability with BIM.

In order to confirm the stability of the exterior walls and storefront at the Museum, EDiS brought in our BIM (building information modeling) Services team and 3-D laser scanning technology. This technology combined with various softwares and hardwares allowed EDiS to confirm the vertical and horizontal differentials in the facade. Had traditional means been used to investigate the wall, it would have required extensive and expensive investigations of facade walls as well as the work associated with the put back of these investigations. The use of this technology allowed EDiS to confirm that the exterior walls and storefront were stable enough without any structural repairs. Both money and valuable time were saved.

peace of mind.

“Rehabilitation and restoration of historic buildings is tricky, tedious work. EDiS is to be commended for doing its work in a way that did not disturb any of the historic fabric in either of the two buildings.”

Building

teamwork through collaboration.

Continual communication and meetings between EDiS, DIGSAU, Delaware Historical Society, and the subcontractors were key to the success of this project. EDiS and DIGSAU worked hand-in-hand to uncover creative solutions to difficult problems that would enable the project to stay on time and within budget. According to Project Architect Katey Everett Baniewicz, DIGSAU appreciated that “the EDiS team was proactive on site to address the inevitable issues that come from renovating historic buildings without knowing what lay beneath the soil, behind the stucco, or above the ceiling.”

Building

award winning projects.

This project was recognized as a recipient of the Construction Excellence Award from the Delaware Contractors Association (DCA). For over 20 years, the State of Delaware’s Office of Management and Budget has presented this prestigious award in partnership with the DCA. The award recognizes those projects that bring distinction, skill, quality, and integrity to the construction industry in Delaware.
