Specifics:
Cape Henlopen School District’s new two-story high school opened for the start of the 2009 school year. The building has departmental wings which includes computer banks and wireless technology throughout each wing. The media center, auditorium, commons area and gymnasium are accessible for public use after school hours. The division of space promotes optimal flexibility as each wing can support several different educational concepts such as a math and science and JROTC. The wings are designed for future growth and expansion.
The school design incorporates energy efficient materials and design solutions throughout the facility. In fact, the school has the largest geothermal well field in Delaware (500 wells at a depth of 200’). Other “green” and sustainable elements include solar tint windows, recycled flooring projects, White (“cool”) EPDM roofing system, Encelium system, bike racks and economy parking spaces. The space also makes use of solar orientation for the best utilization of sunlight.
Since the completion of the new high school, EDiS has completely demolished and removed the old high school. The new 10,000 sf field house was turned over to the school in 2008. The field house supports all athletic programs adjacent to the new athletic stadium and includes visitor and home team locker rooms, official’s locker rooms and equipment storage. Currently, site work, field and parking areas are still under construction. Work on the entire project will be completed the summer of 2010.
